A Slovakian court has ordered a fresh review and retrial in the widely reported 2018 murders of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, marking a significant development years after the high-profile case shocked Slovakia and sparked protests over corruption and justice. The retrial focuses in part on allegations against the suspected mastermind behind the killings, renewing scrutiny of unresolved aspects of the investigation and trial proceedings.
The case originates from February 21, 2018, when Kuciak, a reporter known for his work on corruption and organised crime links involving political figures and business interests, and Kušnírová were shot dead at their home in Velka Mača, Slovakia. Their murders triggered widespread national outrage against corruption and impunity, ultimately contributing to the fall of the government led by then-Prime Minister Robert Fico and supporting calls for judicial reform.
In the years since the killings, several individuals have been convicted in connection with the case, including gunmen and intermediaries responsible for carrying out the attack. However, questions have persisted over the full extent of responsibility, particularly regarding those alleged to have ordered the murders. Most notably, Slovak authorities initially charged businessman Marián Kočner with commissioning the killing, but the Supreme Court annulled his conviction in late 2024, citing legal and procedural issues in earlier trial phases. The decision paved the way for renewed legal proceedings and a comprehensive review of evidence and testimony.
The retrial, which formally began in January 2026, is aimed at addressing these procedural shortcomings and ensuring accountability for all those implicated in the plotting and execution of the murders. Prosecutors and judicial authorities have reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice, emphasizing that the case remains a litmus test for Slovakia’s legal system and its ability to tackle high-profile crimes involving powerful figures. The fresh proceedings will re-examine witness statements, financial links, and other evidence previously presented, and may call new testimony as part of efforts to build a robust and impartial record.
The renewed trial has drawn international attention from press freedom organisations and human rights advocates, who view the pursuit of full accountability as essential not only for the families of Kuciak and Kušnírová but also for broader protections for investigative journalism and the rule of law in Europe. The case continues to symbolize the risks faced by journalists probing corruption and the importance of transparent judicial processes in upholding democratic norms.
