RSF Calls on Israel to Free 16 Palestinian Journalists Immediately

On the night of 16 October 2025, Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci—host of the television program “Report” on RAI—was the victim of a bomb attack outside his home in the Roman suburb of Campo Ascolano.
Around 22:17 CEST, a rudimentary explosive device weighing approximately one kilogram detonated near the front gate of his house. The blast—believed to have been planted between two flower pots—destroyed Ranucci’s car and the vehicle of his daughter; thankfully, no one was injured.
Ranucci, who has been under police protection since 2021 following repeated threats tied to his investigations into organized crime, stated that the explosion might have been fatal had someone been passing by minutes earlier—his daughter had walked past the cars a short time before the detonation.
Italy’s anti-mafia prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the attack. The act has drawn strong condemnation from senior politicians, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who described the incident as a “serious act of intimidation.”
Observers say this attack is emblematic of an increasingly hostile environment for investigative journalism in Italy, especially given the subject matter of Ranucci’s work, which regularly challenges powerful interest groups and mafia networks.
The incident has prompted media unions and press‐freedom organizations to call for heightened protections for journalists and accountability for those who would seek to silence critical reporting through violence.
