On March 26, 2025, Anna Prokofieva, a 35-year-old war correspondent for Russia’s state-run Channel One, was killed when her vehicle struck a landmine in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border. Her cameraman, Dmitry Volkov, sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Prokofieva had been covering the conflict in Ukraine since 2023, often reporting from high-risk areas alongside Russian troops. She was known for her strong support of the Russian Armed Forces and frequently shared images of herself in military attire, sometimes featuring the “Z” symbol associated with Russia’s military campaign.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) condemned her killing and called for a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay also deplored the incident, emphasizing the need for adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of journalists in conflict zones.
Prokofieva’s death highlights the increasing dangers faced by journalists covering the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 20 media personnel have been killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Belgorod region, where the incident occurred, has experienced frequent drone and shelling attacks amid the conflict, underscoring the volatile and hazardous conditions for journalists operating in the area.
