Taliban authorities raided Radio Begum, Afghanistan’s only nationwide women-run radio station, arresting two employees and suspending its operations. The Ministry of Information and Culture cited “multiple violations,” including the unauthorized provision of content to a foreign-based television channel, as grounds for the shutdown.
Founded in March 2021 by Afghan journalist Hamida Aman, Radio Begum was established to provide educational programming for Afghan women and girls, particularly in the face of increasing restrictions on women’s rights under Taliban rule. The station’s content, produced entirely by Afghan women, includes lessons on health, psychology, and spirituality, and is broadcast in Dari and Pashto across Kabul and 19 provinces
The recent raid, conducted by the General Directorate of Intelligence and the Ministry of Information and Culture, involved the seizure of equipment and the detention of two male staff members. The Taliban’s actions have been condemned by international organizations, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which called the closure a “brutal attack on press freedom” and demanded the immediate release of the detained employees.
In response to the suspension, Radio Begum has pledged to adhere to Taliban regulations and journalism principles in hopes of resuming operations. The station’s sister satellite channel, Begum TV, operates from France and continues to provide educational content to Afghan students.
This development underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan women in the media sector and the broader societal restrictions imposed by the Taliban since their return to power in 2021
