Kanyshai Mamyrkulova, an independent journalist and civic activist from Kyrgyzstan, was arrested in Bishkek on March 20, 2025, in a case that has drawn sharp criticism from international human rights groups. According to reports, her arrest was orchestrated by police officers posing as potential buyers of an apartment she had listed for sale, suggesting a premeditated effort to detain her discreetly. Authorities claim that her social media posts incited national unrest and ethnic tension.
Mamyrkulova faces serious charges under Article 278 and Article 330 of Kyrgyzstan’s Criminal Code. These charges relate to allegedly calling for mass unrest and inciting national or interethnic hostility, with investigators citing her comments about the Kyrgyz-Tajik border as a potential threat to public order. A linguistic forensic analysis reportedly supported these claims, but human rights defenders argue the charges are excessive and politically motivated.
The Sverdlovsky District Court ruled on March 22 to detain Mamyrkulova until May 19 while investigations proceed. Her appeals against the decision were rejected by higher courts, and in a further blow, authorities seized her only residence, escalating concerns that her detention is both punitive and aimed at silencing dissent. Observers say the seizure is a form of financial and psychological pressure, designed to punish her for her journalistic work and public activism.
International watchdogs, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, and the International Partnership for Human Rights, have condemned Mamyrkulova’s detention. They argue that the charges are part of a broader crackdown on independent media in Kyrgyzstan. RSF called for her immediate release and described the case as a misuse of the judicial system to suppress free expression.
The situation has spotlighted increasing restrictions on journalists in Kyrgyzstan, particularly those who question government narratives. As her case moves forward, human rights advocates continue to demand her release and the protection of press freedom.
