July 15, 2025In the first half of 2025, 86 journalists were killed worldwide, marking a 16% increase from the same period last year, according to a report by the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC). This alarming rise is largely driven by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where Israeli forces killed 31 Palestinian journalists. Since October 2023, nearly 200 journalists have been killed in Gaza alone.
Other deadly countries for journalists this year include Sudan, Mexico, and the Ukraine-Russia conflict zone, each recording 6 deaths. Iran followed with 4 journalists killed in Israeli airstrikes in June. In South Asia, India reported 4 deaths, Pakistan 3, and Nepal 1. Additional fatalities occurred in Colombia, Honduras, Iraq, the United States, Peru, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen (2 each), as well as Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Lebanon, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Zimbabwe (1 each).
Regionally, the Middle East remains the most dangerous area for journalists with 43 deaths, followed by Latin America with 16, Africa with 10, Europe with 6, and North America with 2. PEC noted that 179 media workers were killed in 2024, including 80 in Gaza alone. The organisation condemned the killings and called for thorough investigations, accountability, and increased international protection for journalists.
