Ukrainian Investigative Journalism at Risk Despite Groundbreaking Revelations
July 28, 2025Gaza is facing a catastrophic food crisis, one shaped not by natural disaster but by calculated policies of deprivation. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the humanitarian situation has sharply deteriorated since early 2025, when Israel intensified its blockade, halting nearly all humanitarian aid for three months. As a result, essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine have nearly vanished, while infrastructure needed to deliver aid has been destroyed or rendered inoperable.
Prices for basic items like bread and oil have surged by more than 1,000%, leaving families unable to feed themselves. Food warehouses and bakeries have been targeted or cut off from fuel. Even humanitarian groups such as the World Food Programme were forced to suspend operations after exhausting their stocks. By May, some 66,000 children were suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
The Gaza Health Ministry has reported over 100 deaths directly linked to starvation, including many children. In July alone, more than 5,000 children were hospitalized for malnutrition. The World Health Organization has described the crisis as “man-made mass starvation,” pointing to the deliberate blocking of aid and destruction of food systems. Pregnant women and infants are among the most affected, with widespread reports of stunted growth and wasting.
Although a recent “pause” in fighting allowed limited aid deliveries, the scale of need far outstrips what has arrived. With northern Gaza still largely unreachable and disease outbreaks compounding the crisis, experts warn that the situation is on the brink of irreversible famine.
What is unfolding in Gaza is not only a humanitarian emergency but a potential war crime. The intentional starvation of civilians through siege and obstruction of aid is outlawed under international law. Without immediate, unrestricted humanitarian access, more lives will be lost.
