Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the day marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a milestone in defending press freedom.

Since its inception, World Press Freedom Day has served as a platform to:

The 31st World Press Freedom Day International Conference, to be held from May 2-4, 2025, underscores the connection between free journalism and a sustainable future.

The 2025 theme, “A Press for the Planet,” focuses on the role of journalism in addressing global environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Accurate reporting is vital for raising awareness, combating misinformation, and driving international efforts to protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems.
