Dr. Eman Shweikh, a well-known Lebanese journalist, TV host, and university professor, announced her resignation from MTV Lebanon on November 16, 2024, due to escalating death threats allegedly from Hezbollah supporters. She revealed on X that the threats included being followed home, chased on the road, and her family being harassed. The Samir Kassir Eyes Center reported that the intimidation began on November 12, accompanied by accusations of treason following her political commentary.
Shweikh emphasized the absence of state protection in Lebanon, stating: “laws are inexistent…I do not want to expose my life and the lives of my family to danger”. She expressed sadness but believed quitting was necessary for her safety and thanked MTV’s chairman, Michel Mur, for his support.
Since the Israel–Hezbollah escalation, threats reportedly intensified. Shweikh noted being warned that she could be barred from returning to her hometown in the south and even threatened with being sent to Syria to be killed. Legal advocate Tarek Chindeb condemned the threats, highlighting the issue of “illegal weapons and militias outside accountability”.
Media rights groups warn that this case highlights the broader climate of impunity in Lebanon, where journalists face targeted harassment and physical threats from non‑state actors. The incident follows a pattern of intimidation against media professionals, including previous attacks on MTV staff during protests and coverage of the Beirut port explosion.
Dr. Eman Shweikh’s resignation marks the profound personal toll of escalating violence against journalists in Lebanon. Her experience underscores the urgent need for legal reforms and stronger protections for media workers under threat.
