South African journalist Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, who had been missing for nearly three months, are now believed to be dead after police discovered human remains near Rust de Winter in Limpopo on May 7. The bodies were found buried in a shallow grave in a remote bushy area, following a breakthrough in the case that involved multiple arrests.
The couple was last seen on February 18 in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, sparking a weeks-long investigation and public appeals for information. Ndlovu, a prominent media figure, was the founder of Pretoria-based Capital Live FM and was known for his active reporting and community involvement. Mdhluli was a respected member of the community and had no known public conflicts.
According to authorities, five suspects have been arrested in connection with their disappearance. One of the suspects reportedly led police to the location of the grave, where decomposed remains were uncovered. While DNA testing is still underway to confirm the identities, investigators strongly believe the bodies belong to Ndlovu and Mdhluli based on evidence collected at the scene and testimony from the suspect.
The news has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s journalism and activist communities. Press organizations, including the African Media and Communicators Forum and the National Press Club, have condemned the apparent murder and called on law enforcement to pursue justice swiftly and transparently.
“We are devastated by this tragic outcome. Sibusiso was not only a journalist but a community builder,” said a colleague from Capital Live FM. “He gave a voice to the voiceless and sought truth without fear.”
Police have not yet confirmed a motive, but foul play is suspected, and further charges may follow as the investigation continues. The incident adds to growing concerns about the safety of journalists in South Africa, where media professionals have increasingly faced threats and violence, especially those reporting on corruption and crime.
As the country awaits DNA confirmation, the families of Ndlovu and Mdhluli continue to mourn and call for accountability. Their disappearance and tragic end have become a painful reminder of the risks faced by those who speak truth to power.
