Media giant Reach plc, publisher of the Irish Mirror, Irish Daily Star, and numerous UK titles, has unveiled a sweeping editorial restructure that puts approximately 600 jobs at risk across its operations. Among them, around 20 jobs in Ireland—spanning the Irish Mirror, Irish Star, and related websites—are expected to be impacted, marking this as one of the most extensive overhauls in the company’s history.
According to editorial chief content officer David Higgerson, the company is pivoting toward video, audio, and live-news formats, aiming to match modern consumption habits and strengthen its subscription model strategy. Despite the job cuts, Reach plans to redeploy affected staff by creating 135 new roles, prioritizing those displaced by the restructuring.
The move comes amid broader headwinds for the media industry—declining print revenues, diminished traffic from Google and social platforms, and rising competition. Reach reported healthy profits last year but has already eliminated nearly 800 jobs in 2023 and faces continued financial pressure.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has raised serious concerns, branding the latest action a “devastating body blow” to journalists already battling falling morale and uncertainty. They caution that “mass redundancies” could severely hinder the future quality of journalism.
In Ireland, the affected newsrooms are relatively small—about 100 staff across Dublin and Belfast, reflecting the consolidated editorial structure that Reach built since acquiring its 50% stake in the Star in 2020. Staff fears now center on increased workloads and reduced capacity for local journalism.
This restructure signals Reach’s comprehensive effort to reinvent itself amid disruptive AI-driven platforms and shifting reader behaviors—but at the palpable cost of its journalistic workforce on both sides of the Irish Sea.
