The Loss of Journalist Ayman Haniyeh in Gaza
September 3, 2025September 02, 2025 – Palestine –
The war in Gaza has claimed yet another journalist, with Rasmi Jihad Salem, a cameraman for Manara Media Company, killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City. His death raises the total number of journalists and media workers killed since October 2023 to 248, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. Officials condemned the attack as part of a deliberate effort to silence the press and urged international institutions to pursue accountability under international law.
In a statement, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) World Service mourned Salem as a “brave and committed journalist” who embodied truth-telling amid destruction. The network said his killing reflected a broader strategy to extinguish independent voices: “Israel’s enemy is the truth, and it silences truthful reporting with bullets.”
His death follows one of the deadliest assaults on the press in recent weeks. On August 25, 2025, Israeli warplanes launched a double strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The attack killed at least 20 people, including five journalists: Mariam Abu Dagga, Hossam al-Masri, Mohammed Salama, Moaz Abu Taha, and Ahmed Abu Aziz. The “double tap” strike, which hit first responders and journalists after an initial bombardment, drew immediate condemnation worldwide.
The United Nations demanded an independent investigation into the hospital killings, stressing that over 247 journalists have died since the war began, making Gaza the deadliest conflict for the press in modern history. UN officials said attacks on reporters, combined with Israel’s near-total ban on foreign correspondents entering Gaza, represent unprecedented restrictions on press freedom.
The killing of Rasmi Jihad Salem underscores the staggering risks journalists face in Gaza, where reporting has become indistinguishable from frontline combat. As the death toll rises, international advocacy groups continue to warn that without urgent accountability, the voices documenting Gaza’s devastation risk being extinguished altogether.
