At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the State of Qatar and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) came together in a high-level ministerial initiative to spotlight the grave dangers faced by journalists in Gaza. Qatar, represented by H.E. Dr. Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, reaffirmed that deliberate targeting of journalists violates international humanitarian law and called on the global community to ensure accountability for those responsible. She stressed that safeguarding journalists is not only a moral obligation but also a critical step in ensuring transparency during conflict.
The event, co-organized by RSF and supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together representatives from more than 20 countries, alongside Palestinian journalists reporting from Gaza, Israeli media representatives, and members of the international press. It was one of the most significant UN gatherings to date, dedicated solely to press freedom and journalist protection in conflict zones. The joint platform highlighted the unprecedented risks faced by reporters in Gaza, where dozens of journalists have been killed since the escalation of hostilities.
During the meeting, foreign ministers from Qatar, Finland, and Greece delivered strong messages in support of RSF’s call for concrete action. Their interventions emphasized the urgent need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2222, which enshrines protections for journalists during armed conflicts. Central to the discussion was a demand for Israel to ensure the safety of Palestinian reporters, permit unrestricted access for international journalists, and facilitate evacuations when necessary.
RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire described the gathering as a “turning point” in mobilizing international will to defend media workers in Gaza. He noted that for the first time at this scale, governments and civil society united to press for immediate protective measures. The collaboration between RSF and Qatar added weight to calls for binding mechanisms that hold perpetrators of attacks on journalists accountable under international law.
By standing together at the UN, Qatar and RSF signaled a powerful commitment to protecting the press. Their joint action serves as a reminder that without journalists, there can be no reliable record of events in Gaza, and no justice for those silenced while seeking the truth.
