A television crew from Pryluky TV in northern Ukraine found themselves at the center of a Russian drone attack while on assignment at a municipal building, highlighting the growing risks faced by journalists working in active war zones. The incident occurred during a strike on the city council building, where reporters were filming official proceedings when air raid warnings escalated into an explosion nearby.
According to reports from media watchdogs, the journalists were inside the building when the attack began and were forced to evacuate immediately to a bomb shelter as explosions struck the area. While the crew escaped without physical injuries, their professional equipment was left behind and subsequently destroyed in the blast.
The team had been on location covering a scheduled editorial assignment, including filming a local government meeting. Because multiple reporting tasks were planned, they had brought two full sets of cameras and broadcasting equipment, all of which were lost when the building was damaged during the strike.
Media representatives said the journalists were able to follow safety procedures and reach shelter in time, preventing casualties among the crew. However, the destruction of equipment has significantly impacted the station’s ability to conduct field reporting, forcing it to rely on mobile devices for coverage in the aftermath.
The strike is part of a broader pattern of attacks affecting Ukrainian media infrastructure during the ongoing war, where newsrooms, transmission facilities, and field equipment have repeatedly been damaged or destroyed in bombardments across multiple regions. Press organizations have documented hundreds of such incidents since the full-scale invasion began, underscoring the systematic risk faced by journalists.
Although no staff members were injured in this incident, Ukrainian media unions warn that repeated exposure to drone and missile strikes continues to endanger both journalists and the continuity of local reporting, particularly in frontline and northern regions. They have called for stronger protective measures and improved safety protocols for media workers operating in high-risk zones.
