Belarusian Journalist Walks Free After Serving Prison Term
October 14, 2025When Investigative Truth Becomes a Lifeline in the Darkest Places
An investigation into the death of a Ukrainian journalist imprisoned by Russia stands among the ten finalists shortlisted for the 2025 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism. The project, Viktoriia Roshchyna, Lost in ‘The Grey Zone’, was led by 45 journalists (among them from Ukrainska Pravda), who pursued the inquiry she had begun—into the thousands of Ukrainians illegally detained by Russia, a mission that cost her life.
The winner will be revealed on 21 October at a ceremony held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, in the Daphne Caruana Galizia Press Room. Finalists will attend both the award event and a seminar on press freedom earlier that same day.
Launched in 2020, the Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize is open to professional journalists or teams worldwide whose in-depth work has been published or broadcast by media based in one of the European Union’s 27 member states. An independent jury—comprised of representatives from media, civil society, and European journalists’ organisations across all EU countries—selects the winner.
The prize includes a €20,000 reward, underscoring the European Parliament’s commitment to investigative journalism and free expression.
