Ghanaian Journalist Wins Prestigious Science Journalism Award
December 15, 2025Wael Al-Dahdouh to receive 2025 Human Rights Defender Award
Amnesty International has announced that it will honor Palestinian journalist Wael Al-Dahdouh with its 2025 Human Rights Defender Award, recognizing his courageous reporting from Gaza amid unprecedented personal loss and extreme danger. As a senior journalist and bureau chief, Al-Dahdouh continued reporting throughout Israel’s war on Gaza despite repeated displacement, direct threats, and the killing of multiple members of his family in air strikes.
Amnesty highlighted his work as a powerful example of journalism carried out in defense of human rights, accountability, and the right of civilians to be seen and heard during armed conflict. His reporting documented the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza while amplifying civilian voices often erased from international coverage.
The award underscores the vital role journalists play as human rights defenders and draws renewed attention to the grave risks faced by media workers in conflict zones. It also reinforces calls for protection, accountability, and an end to impunity for crimes against journalists.
