Canadian pro-Palestine journalist and activist Yves Engler was detained in Montreal after publicly criticizing pro-Israel commentator Dahlia Kurtz. Engler’s social media posts accused Kurtz of promoting anti-Palestinian rhetoric, labeling her a “genocide supporter” and “fascist” following her calls for deporting pro-Palestinian activists. Authorities arrested Engler on charges of harassment and indecent communication.
He was held for five days in Bordeaux prison before being released on bail. The detention stirred significant controversy, with many seeing it as an infringement on free speech rights. Supporters viewed the charges as politically motivated attempts to silence dissent regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Engler condemned the arrest as a tactic to suppress political expression, asserting that “the fight for free speech is far from over.”
During his imprisonment, Engler faced harsh conditions and limited communication. Human rights advocates and press freedom groups raised alarms, warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent for activists and journalists expressing unpopular opinions. Canadian political figures, including Green Party of Quebec leader Alex Tyrrell, condemned the detention as a “shocking attack on free expression.”
Engler’s case underscores the tension between laws aimed at preventing harassment and protecting freedom of speech, especially in politically sensitive contexts. His supporters stress the need to defend activists’ rights to challenge dominant narratives without fear of legal consequences.
After his release, Engler pledged to continue advocating on Palestinian issues and resisting censorship. His detention has sparked a broader debate in Canada over free speech limits, government overreach, and challenges faced by pro-Palestinian voices in the public arena.
