Applies to: https://tjcproject.org (the “Site”)

1) Who we are (Controller)

TJC Project is an initiative by Al Jazeera Media Network (“AJMN”, “we”, “us”). For this Site, AJMN is the controller of personal data.

AJMN issues a group privacy notice that covers how the network collects, uses, shares and safeguards personal data; TJC follows that notice and this Site-specific supplement.

2) What we collect, why, and how long we keep it

We collect only what we need for the purposes below. Some activity is editorial/journalistic (see §4), which may be subject to specific legal exemptions.

TJC’s Site includes a newsletter callout (“Sign up to TJC Bulletin”) and commemorative/editorial sections (e.g., Tribute Wall and “Casefiles”).

3) Cookies & similar technologies

We follow AJMN’s Cookie Policy. You can manage non-mandatory cookie categories via the Cookie Preferences link in the footer; categories include Strictly Necessary, Performance (first/third-party), Functional, Targeting, and Social Media cookies. Non-essential cookies are used only with consent where the law requires (e.g., EU/UK).

On tjcproject.org we use essential cookies for security and basic functionality. If we introduce analytics or other non-essential categories on this Site, we will (i) disclose them here and in the banner/preferences center and (ii) gather consent where required.

4) Legal bases (EU/UK) & journalistic purposes

Depending on the activity, we rely on consent, legitimate interests (e.g., to respond to messages, protect our services, and publish/maintain editorial archives), contract (if applicable), or legal obligations. AJMN’s group notice also contemplates journalistic purposes processing. We do not use solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.

We do not intentionally collect special-category data on this Site; if you include such data in a submission, we will handle it with heightened care consistent with the group notice.

5) Where your data comes from

  • Directly from you (forms, email, newsletter sign-up).
  • Automatically from your device/browser (logs, necessary cookies).
  • Public sources or third parties for editorial content.

6) Sharing & international transfers

We share personal data with vetted service providers/processors, and—where appropriate—within the Al Jazeera group. Because AJMN operates internationally, data may be transferred to countries outside your own. For transfers from the EEA/UK to countries without an adequacy decision, AJMN uses approved safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK IDTA/Addendum.

7) Retention

We keep personal data only for as long as needed for the purposes described, then delete or anonymize it per AJMN’s retention criteria (ongoing relationship + applicable limitation periods and a short buffer; restricted processing during litigation hold).

8) Your rights & how to exercise them

EU/UK (GDPR/UK GDPR)

You may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object, portability, and to withdraw consent; you can also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Identity verification may be required. Submit requests via AJMN’s privacy request form (see §1).

California (CCPA/CPRA)

If the CCPA/CPRA applies to us, California residents may know/access, correct, delete, opt-out of “sale” or “sharing”, and limit the use/disclosure of sensitive personal information; they also have the right to non-discrimination. We honor recognized opt-out preference signals (e.g., Global Privacy Control) as required. You can exercise rights through the AJMN privacy request form and (where applicable) a “Your Privacy Choices / Do Not Sell or Share” link.

9) Children’s privacy

This Site is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will take appropriate action consistent with applicable law.

10) Security

AJMN implements appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data (access controls, encryption in transit, least-privilege access, backups, incident response). No system is perfectly secure; online transmission is at your own risk.

11) Your choices & controls

  • Cookie Preferences: manage non-essential cookie categories at any time.
  • Newsletter: unsubscribe via the link in any bulletin or by contacting us.
  • Opt-out signals: when required by law (e.g., CPRA), we honor recognized opt-out preference signals such as GPC.

We will post changes on this page and update the “Last updated” date. For material changes, we’ll provide a clear notice (e.g., banner or email where appropriate).
