Sara Netanyahu’s Legal Actions Against Journalist and Activist Spark Debate on Press Freedom
March 23, 2025March 23, 2025 – Pakistan –
Farhan Mallick, a Pakistani journalist and founder of the online news platform Raftar, was arrested on March 20, 2025, by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). He was charged under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) with disseminating what authorities labeled as “anti-state content.” Additionally, he was accused of operating an illegal call center allegedly involved in defrauding foreigners, a claim that many in the journalism community dispute as an attempt to tarnish his credibility.
Mallick’s detention drew widespread criticism from media organizations and rights groups. They argued that the charges were politically motivated and indicative of a broader crackdown on press freedom in Pakistan. The case sparked debate over the use of PECA, a law that has increasingly been used to target journalists, activists, and dissenting voices. Critics say that the legislation lacks proper oversight and enables authorities to silence independent media under the guise of cybercrime prevention.
On April 7, 2025, a local court in Karachi granted Mallick bail in both the PECA and fraud-related cases. The court accepted surety bonds of Rs 100,000 for each charge. His release was welcomed by media watchdogs, although they remain concerned about the chilling effect the case may have on independent journalism in the country. Legal proceedings are ongoing, and Mallick’s legal team continues to maintain his innocence.
The case has amplified calls for reforms to Pakistan’s cybercrime laws and protections for journalists. Organizations like the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders have urged the government to cease using vague legal frameworks to harass the press. As the country grapples with increasing political instability and censorship, Mallick’s case serves as a high-profile example of the precarious position journalists face.
