António Pedro Santos, a photojournalist associated with the Portuguese news agency Lusa, has been awarded the Gazeta de Fotografia prize by the Clube de Jornalistas. His winning portfolio comprises images that accompanied reports under the collective title “Hope Has Won in Syria,” produced in the aftermath of the deposition of Bashar al-Assad on 8 December 2024.
The recognition forms part of the 40th edition of the Prémios Gazeta 2024, in which other categories were also awarded. For instance, the Gazeta de Mérito was given to journalist Mário Zambujal for his long and varied career in Portuguese media. Santos’s images are said to have captured scenes across Syria, translating conflict, resilience, and human stories into a cohesive visual narrative under the banner “A esperança venceu na Síria.”
Santos’s work is not solely limited to capturing frontline stories. In addition to his role at Lusa, he is known for contributing as a trainer in photography at institutions such as Cenjor and Etic, while also working as a stringer for agencies including EPA/Lusa and Global Imagens. His trajectory in photojournalism—balancing field assignments, visual storytelling, and mentorship—positions him as a notable figure within Portugal’s visual journalism space.
The Gazeta award not only celebrates Santos’s technical and narrative skills but also highlights the power of visual media to inform and move audiences. The jury recognized his photography as carrying strong editorial weight and coherence across a crisis zone.
This honor is one among multiple distinctions announced at the same Gala, underlining the breadth of journalistic production in Portugal—from multimedia and radio to investigative press. It underscores that photojournalism continues to play a vital role in storytelling, especially in the context of conflicts, migration, and human rights coverage.
