The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), an organization advocating for the safety of journalists worldwide, has voiced grave concern over the rising number of journalist fatalities. In 2024, the number of journalists killed reached 179, a sharp 28% increase compared to the previous year. Most of these deaths occurred in conflict zones, with the Middle East, particularly Gaza, seeing a significant rise in casualties. PEC has condemned these killings as blatant breaches of international law, demanding thorough and impartial investigations to hold perpetrators accountable.
PEC’s annual report highlights the devastating toll in Gaza, where at least 161 journalists have lost their lives due to ongoing hostilities since October 2023. Other countries experiencing similar violence against media workers include Ukraine, Mexico, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. PEC has stressed the urgent need for an international framework to safeguard journalists operating in these high-risk areas and ensure that those responsible for such acts face justice.
So far in 2025, PEC has reported 55 journalist deaths globally, with Pakistan, Nepal, and India seeing some of the most dangerous environments for reporters. PEC’s president, Blaise Lempen, called for greater international solidarity to support press freedom and the protection of media professionals. The organization reiterated its call for justice for journalists who have been killed, urging global leaders and institutions to act in unison to prevent further violence.
The growing number of attacks on journalists underlines the critical need for worldwide action to address these threats. The PEC’s ongoing efforts focus on raising awareness about the importance of press freedom, emphasizing that without a free press, the fundamental rights of citizens cannot be guaranteed.
