Journalist Jéssica Martínez was violently struck in the chest by a security guard of Justice Minister Rodrigo Nicora while attempting to report outside the Emboscada Antigua Penitentiary. The attack occurred unexpectedly during her routine coverage and was captured on video, sparking immediate outrage among media professionals and observers.
In response to mounting pressure from her colleagues, who demanded at a minimum an institutional apology, the Ministry of Justice issued a statement via WhatsApp. In it, Minister Nicora expressed regret for the “inappropriate action of his guard.”
The incident prompted solidarity across the journalistic community in Paraguay, raising serious concerns about the boundaries between state power and media freedom. Though an apology was issued, critics argue that it falls short of accountability. The assault has highlighted the need for clearer protections for reporters, especially those covering state institutions and matters of public interest.
The case underscores the persistent risks faced by journalists in Paraguay, even when working in public spaces. It also raises broader questions about institutional responsibility and whether apologies can substitute for tangible changes in policy, oversight, and training within government security forces.
