On April 20, 2025, the Palestinian National Council, the highest decision-making body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), issued a statement calling for the protection of journalists amid ongoing Israeli attacks on reporters in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The council held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for its crimes against journalists, emphasizing the need for international accountability and support for media professionals working in these regions.
This appeal coincided with Arab Media Day, highlighting the critical role of journalists in conflict zones and the increasing dangers they face. The council’s statement underscores the importance of safeguarding press freedom and ensuring that journalists can operate without fear of violence or intimidation.
In recent months, numerous reports have documented the targeting of journalists in Palestine. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 31 Palestinian journalists were detained by Israeli forces as of January 2024, many without charge. Additionally, several journalists have been killed or injured while covering the conflict, raising concerns about the safety of media personnel in the region.
The Palestinian National Council’s call reflects a broader international concern for the safety and rights of journalists in conflict zones. Organizations such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) have consistently condemned attacks on media workers and called for greater protection measures. The United Nations has also highlighted the need for accountability and the protection of journalists under international law.
As the situation in Gaza and the West Bank remains volatile, the international community continues to monitor the safety of journalists and advocates for measures to ensure their protection. The Palestinian National Council’s statement serves as a reminder of the essential role of journalists in documenting events and holding parties accountable in conflict situations.
