The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate issued an urgent appeal to international institutions to intervene on behalf of detained journalist Ali Sammoudi, whose health is reportedly deteriorating due to medical neglect in Israeli custody. The syndicate holds Israeli authorities fully responsible for his well-being.
Sammoudi, 58, was arrested on April 29 at his home in Jenin. Following his detention, he was allegedly subjected to abuse and transferred through multiple facilities, including an Israeli military outpost in Jenin, Al-Jalama detention center, and finally Megiddo prison. On May 8, Israeli authorities issued a six-month administrative detention order against him, allowing for imprisonment without formal charges or trial.
His family reports that Sammoudi suffers from chronic illnesses and requires continuous medical care. Notably, he still carries live bullet fragments in his head from a previous injury sustained while covering Israeli military operations. The syndicate warns that his health has significantly worsened under detention conditions.
Sammoudi is among 20 Palestinian journalists currently held under administrative detention, with a total of 50 journalists detained since the onset of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Six additional journalists were detained before the conflict.
The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate’s appeal underscores growing concerns over the treatment of journalists in conflict zones and the use of administrative detention without due process. They urge international human rights organizations and press freedom advocates to take immediate action to ensure Sammoudi receives necessary medical attention and to address broader issues surrounding the detention of journalists.
