On December 26, 2024, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) strongly condemned the Israeli military’s killing of five journalists in Gaza, labeling the act a deliberate war crime. The journalists were killed when an Israeli airstrike targeted a broadcast vehicle near Al-Awda Hospital in Al-Nuseirat camp, central Gaza Strip.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of violence against Palestinian media workers. Since the onset of the Israeli military campaign in Gaza on October 7, 2023, over 210 journalists have been killed, with many more injured or displaced. The PJS reports that journalists have been targeted in their workplaces, homes, and even in shelters near hospitals, indicating a systematic approach to silencing media coverage.
The PJS emphasizes that such actions constitute violations of international humanitarian law, particularly the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which offers special protection to journalists during armed conflicts. The Syndicate asserts that these attacks are not isolated incidents but part of a deliberate strategy to suppress freedom of expression and prevent the documentation of events on the ground.
In response, the PJS has called upon the international community, including human rights organizations and media institutions, to take immediate action. They urge the provision of urgent protection for Palestinian journalists and the initiation of legal proceedings against those responsible for these crimes. The Syndicate also appeals to international media to highlight the plight of Palestinian journalists and ensure that such violations do not go unnoticed.
Despite the escalating dangers, Palestinian journalists remain committed to their mission of reporting the truth. The PJS affirms that the press will continue to operate with determination and resolve, undeterred by attempts to silence them. They stress the importance of holding perpetrators accountable to uphold the principles of justice and freedom of the press.
