Meta suspended two Instagram accounts belonging to Palestinian journalist and influencer Saleh Aljafarawi, known online as “Mr. FAFO,” citing violations of its Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy. The accounts had a combined following of approximately 9.5 million users.
Aljafarawi utilized his platforms to document the impact of the Israel-Gaza conflict, sharing firsthand accounts and images from the ground. He expressed frustration over the suspensions, noting that the accounts were removed without prior warning. In a video posted on a backup account, he stated, “Unfortunately, they were both deleted at the same time, at a moment when I needed them the most.”
Meta’s decision followed allegations that Aljafarawi had praised the October 7 attacks and had associations with Hamas. Critics accused him of disseminating propaganda and engaging in staged performances to garner sympathy. Some reports labeled him as a “crisis actor,” alleging that he portrayed various roles in his videos, including a grieving father and a medical professional.
Further controversy arose when Aljafarawi was accused of misappropriating funds intended for the reconstruction of Al-Nasr Children’s Hospital in Gaza. Reports suggested that he embezzled approximately $4 million from donations, leading to his arrest. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah denied any involvement in the alleged misappropriation.
The suspension of Aljafarawi’s accounts has sparked debate over the balance between combating misinformation and ensuring freedom of expression. While some view Meta’s actions as necessary to prevent the spread of extremist content, others argue that it suppresses Palestinian voices and narratives.
Aljafarawi’s case highlights the challenges social media platforms face in moderating content during conflicts, where distinguishing between legitimate journalism and propaganda can be complex. It also underscores the broader discourse on digital censorship and the representation of marginalized communities in global narratives.
