184 Silenced, But Not Forgotten
November 9, 2024November 9, 2024 – Palestine/Israel –
In one of the deadliest 24-hour periods for the press in Gaza, three more Palestinian journalists were killed amid continued Israeli bombardment, bringing the total number of media workers killed since October 2023 to at least 184. Reports from Press TV, Anadolu Agency, and the Palestine Chronicle detail the tragic losses of journalists who remained on the ground to document the war’s toll on civilians.
The most recent victim named was journalist Yazan Ibrahim Al-Zwaidi, killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza. Anadolu Agency confirmed his death as part of the rising toll on members of the press. Meanwhile, the Palestine Chronicle reported that three journalists—Mohammed Abu Saada, Mahmoud Wasfi Abu Daka, and Yazan Al-Zwaidi—were killed within 24 hours during a massacre in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood. They were covering the aftermath of previous bombings when fresh Israeli strikes targeted the area, killing them and dozens of others.
These journalists were not embedded with combatants nor engaged in any hostilities. They were fulfilling their duty to report, to document, and to inform. Their deaths reflect a broader and deeply alarming trend: the systematic targeting of press workers in Gaza. Many were marked as journalists, wearing press vests or operating near recognizable media sites. Despite this, they have been among the most consistently targeted civilian groups in this war.
Press freedom organizations and human rights groups have condemned the killings, describing them as part of a deliberate pattern. Some have stated that the targeting of journalists and media infrastructure may constitute war crimes. The cumulative toll is not only measured in bodies but in silenced truths and vanished narratives.
With every journalist killed, Gaza loses a voice—one that might have spoken for the voiceless, captured hidden suffering, or held power to account. The day these three fell was not just a loss for journalism in Gaza—it was a loss for global truth. Their stories, now unfinished, remind the world of a chilling reality: in Gaza, truth is being buried alongside those brave enough to tell it.
