Online Abuse of Turkish Women Journalists Persists Amid Climate of Impunity

Abubaker Abed, a 22-year-old Palestinian journalist from Deir al-Balah in Gaza, recently made the painful decision to leave Gaza after enduring extreme hardship during the ongoing conflict. Known for his courageous reporting on the humanitarian crisis in the region, Abed has documented the devastating impact of war, including severe food shortages and the risk of famine affecting millions of Palestinians.
In an interview with Democracy Now! on May 13, 2025, Abed described his evacuation as an “agonizing decision.” Despite his deep commitment to his community and work, the dire conditions, marked by malnutrition, lack of medical supplies, and constant bombardment, forced him to seek safety abroad. Abed expressed profound guilt about leaving behind his family, friends, and fellow journalists who remain in Gaza, facing daily dangers.
Originally aspiring to be a sports journalist, Abed’s career took a different path as he became a frontline reporter for the harrowing realities of life in Gaza. He shared how the relentless violence and humanitarian collapse transformed his work, making him a witness to immense suffering and loss. Abed highlighted the challenges faced by Gaza’s population, including restricted access to food, clean water, and medical care, and criticized the slow international response to the crisis.
Now in Ireland, where he has found solidarity and safety, Abed continues to process the trauma of his experiences. Although removed from the immediate dangers, he remains deeply connected to his home and is haunted by the memories of conflict. The sounds of military aircraft still trigger fear, and he worries constantly about his loved ones left behind.
Abed’s story highlights the personal sacrifices journalists make in conflict zones. His departure underscores the harsh realities faced by media workers who risk their lives to report truthfully, only to confront threats, displacement, and psychological trauma. His journey brings attention to the urgent need for greater support and protection for journalists covering conflicts worldwide.
