Abdalhadi Farahat, a field correspondent for Yemen Today TV, was injured on July 27 while reporting near the northern edge of the Gaza Strip in the Al‑Sudaniya area. He was hit by live fire from the Israeli army during a volatile reporting assignment along the border. The full extent of his injuries has not been disclosed, though the incident underscores the extreme danger journalists face when covering border zones during active conflict.
Farinat’s experience comes amid rising documentation of journalists being wounded and sometimes killed by Israeli fire in Gaza and the West Bank. According to press freedom groups, Palestinian media workers increasingly find themselves exposed to direct targeting, even when identified as members of the press, highlighting the erosion of protections afforded under international humanitarian law.
This injury reflects a broader pattern. Independent data confirm that Gaza has become one of the deadliest regions in the world for journalists. In early 2025 alone, multiple journalists were killed in airstrikes targeting tents designated for media crews outside hospitals, including in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis. According to RSF and CPJ, over 170 journalists and media workers have been killed since the escalation of the conflict in October 2023, with many more injured or detained.
Abdalhadi Farahat’s wounding is a stark reminder of the perilous conditions under which Palestinian journalists operate. Their presence in active conflict zones continues to shed light on civilian suffering, even as they become casualties themselves. Press organisations are calling for greater accountability and enforcement of international norms to protect journalists who risk their lives reporting from Gaza’s most dangerous frontlines.
