In a chilling attack in Sindh’s Ghotki district, local journalist Tufail Haiderani Rind was fatally shot while transporting his children to school. The brazen assault occurred near Jerwar Road in Mirpur Mathelo, where assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle. Rind died instantly, and, tragically, his eight-year-old niece later died, either from shock or the trauma of witnessing the killing.
Rind was no stranger to threats: he had survived a prior assassination attempt and had previously petitioned for protection from local authorities. At the time of his death, he was serving as general secretary of the Nasrullah Gadhani Press Club and contributed to both Mehran Newspaper and Royal News.
Authorities responded swiftly: Ghotki police filed charges against eight individuals, arresting two named Irfan and Imamdin, believed to be directly involved in the killing. Local press and civil society groups allege that Rind’s life had been repeatedly endangered, yet previous pleas for security measures went largely unheeded. The motive behind the murder is under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may stem from a land dispute within his caste.
The outrage was palpable: journalists staged a sit-in protest outside the Senior Superintendent of Police’s office, demanding prompt action and accountability. Sindh’s Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah, condemned the attack as an assault on press freedom, issuing orders to the Inspector General of Police for a rapid, transparent inquiry.
This brutal incident marks another grim addition to Pakistan’s troubling pattern of violence against media professionals. The arrest of two suspects offers a glimmer of accountability, but many await whether the full network behind the crime will be brought to justice—and whether meaningful protection will be enacted to prevent further bloodshed in the name of free expression.
