Pakistan’s Digital Media Alliance (DigiMAP) has raised alarm over serious threats and intimidation targeting Munizae Jahangir, a senior journalist and anchor known for her fearless reporting on sensitive issues, including controversial blasphemy cases. As a founding member of DigiMAP, Jahangir has been subjected to coordinated attacks aimed at silencing her and undermining press freedom in Pakistan.
The recent wave of hostility, largely driven by religious extremist groups, has put Jahangir’s physical safety and professional integrity at risk. This campaign follows earlier episodes of online harassment and trolling, escalating the dangers she faces in her work. DigiMAP condemns these acts as blatant attempts to stifle free speech and obstruct independent journalism, which is essential for holding those in power accountable.
Sabookh Syed, DigiMAP’s president, highlighted that threats like these are part of a growing trend targeting journalists who cover politically or socially sensitive topics. He stressed that such intimidation tactics must be firmly rejected to protect the democratic principle of freedom of expression. The safety of journalists is not merely a personal issue but a cornerstone for preserving human rights and the public’s access to truthful information.
DigiMAP has urged the Pakistani authorities to thoroughly investigate the threats against Jahangir and ensure that those responsible face legal consequences. The alliance also reaffirmed its commitment to support journalists subjected to harassment and to foster a safer environment for media professionals in the country.
This incident sheds light on the perilous conditions many journalists face in Pakistan, especially women, who often confront heightened risks due to their gender alongside the political challenges of their reporting. The case of Munizae Jahangir underscores the urgent need for robust protections for press freedom and stronger safeguards for journalists against intimidation, harassment, and violence.
As threats against independent media grow, organizations like DigiMAP play a crucial role in advocating for journalists’ rights and highlighting the importance of free and fearless journalism for a healthy democracy.
