Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces detained an Al Jazeera crew—including veteran journalist Givara Budeiri, a cameraperson, and another team member—while they were reporting near Ofer Prison in Beitunia, near Ramallah. The team was covering the release of Palestinian detainees as part of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal between Israel and Palestinian factions.
Footage shows Budeiri reporting live just before she and her colleagues were forcibly taken away by uniformed officers. The crew was transported to a local police station, interrogated, and temporarily detained. Their equipment was reportedly confiscated during the incident. While they were released later that day, the arrest sparked widespread criticism from press freedom groups and media rights advocates.
This incident follows a series of similar detentions by PA forces. Days earlier, an Associated Press journalist and a technician were briefly detained while reporting in the same area. The PA has also recently suspended Al Jazeera’s operations in parts of the West Bank, citing administrative and legal issues—moves that critics say are politically motivated.
Al Jazeera issued a strong condemnation, stating that the detention was a deliberate attempt to prevent coverage of sensitive events and an attack on journalistic freedom. The broadcaster emphasized that its crew was working legally and had informed relevant authorities of their presence.
The arrests raise serious concerns about the state of press freedom under the Palestinian Authority, particularly in the West Bank, where journalists face increasing restrictions from both Israeli and Palestinian forces. This comes at a time when independent media coverage is crucial, especially amid the humanitarian and political fallout from the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Bottom line: The arrest of Givara Budeiri and her crew reflects a growing intolerance toward independent journalism in Palestinian-controlled areas. As the PA clamps down on media during high-stakes events like prisoner exchanges, journalists are being silenced from all sides, undermining transparency, public trust, and the right to report freely in occupied territories.
