The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo State has urgently called for a thorough investigation into the murder of journalist Ojo Peter, fatally shot by armed robbers in Ibadan. The NUJ described the attack as a profound tragedy, emphasising that no journalist should suffer such violence while performing their duties.
Meanwhile, the International Press Centre (IPC) has also condemned the deadly incident, demanding accountability. Their statement made clear that those responsible must be brought to justice swiftly.
Reports indicate that Ojo Peter, a seasoned reporter for Parrot Extra who later founded his own online newspaper, was shot during a daytime robbery along the Molete, Oke Ado axis of Ibadan on August 18, 2025. His death was publicly announced on September 7 by colleagues via the NUJ’s WhatsApp group, leaving many to wonder why the information surfaced weeks after the crime.
According to his younger brother, Enahoro Peter, the journalist was targeted for his crossbody bag and shot in the back despite insisting it contained no valuables. A police officer contacted the family on the same day, informing them of his location at the Orita Challenge police station, by which point it was too late. Vanguard further reported that police later dismantled a two-man robbery gang believed to be responsible; one suspect, Lateef Atanda, was arrested, and another, referred to as Monday, was killed during a confrontation with law enforcement.
The coordinated responses from both the NUJ and IPC highlight the acute vulnerability of journalists in Nigeria, even beyond frontline conflict areas. Their united voice underscores the urgent need for stronger protective measures and swift justice in cases of violence against media workers.
