OSCE Calls for Stronger Protection of Journalists Amid Rising Threats

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Jan Braathu, issued a powerful call for stronger safeguards for journalists, particularly those operating in conflict zones. Speaking at the first Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting of the year, Braathu highlighted the escalating dangers journalists face and stressed the critical role they play in defending human rights, countering disinformation, and upholding democratic accountability.

Braathu emphasized that journalists often serve as society’s eyes and ears in crises, risking their lives to uncover the truth. “We rely on journalists as frontline observers,” he noted, “yet all too often, they pay a high price for fulfilling this role.” He condemned attacks on media professionals as breaches of international law and underscored the need for full accountability for those who target the press.

The OSCE representative also referenced the Helsinki Final Act and the 2018 OSCE Ministerial Council Decision on the Safety of Journalists, both of which obligate participating states to protect media freedom and ensure journalists can work without fear. Citing a previous OSCE position paper, he reiterated that attacks against journalists in conflict areas could constitute war crimes under international law.

Braathu’s remarks were followed by a report to the OSCE Permanent Council in April, where he reaffirmed that media freedom is integral to both democratic governance and broader security. His office continues to track violations against journalists, issue diplomatic interventions, and assist states in developing legal protections and national strategies for press safety.

These statements come amid growing global concern over the erosion of press freedom. From arbitrary detentions to violent assaults, journalists are increasingly under siege. The OSCE’s renewed focus highlights the urgent need for international cooperation and policy reform to protect those who bring truth to light.

With global tensions rising and disinformation campaigns on the rise, the protection of journalists is not just a media issue—it is a fundamental matter of human rights and democratic stability. Braathu’s call is a reminder that without a free press, the foundation of open societies is at risk.
