A new wave of global press repression is becoming increasingly evident, with China, Israel, and Myanmar identified as the top countries imprisoning journalists in 2025. As authoritarian governments across the world intensify their control over the media, journalists continue to face harassment, detention, and even imprisonment for their work. This alarming trend is especially visible in countries with a history of stifling free speech, where the crackdown on press freedom has become more institutionalized and widespread.
China remains the world’s largest jailer of journalists, with a record number of arrests and detentions in 2025. The Chinese government’s systematic targeting of reporters, especially those covering sensitive topics like human rights, the Tiananmen Square massacre, and the treatment of Uyghur Muslims, has made it a global pariah for press freedom. The Communist Party’s strict censorship laws and its heavy-handed control over both traditional and digital media have only increased the risks for journalists in the country. Writers who attempt to report independently or provide alternative narratives face severe retribution, including long prison sentences and constant surveillance.
Meanwhile, Israel has also been criticized for its treatment of journalists, particularly those reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Several reporters, including international correspondents, have faced arbitrary detention, expulsion, or physical violence while covering protests or military operations in Gaza. These actions, coupled with increasing restrictions on journalists’ access to Palestinian territories, have raised concerns about Israel’s commitment to press freedom. Reports indicate that Israeli security forces are frequently using tactics to silence journalists who present narratives critical of government policies or military operations.
Myanmar, still reeling from the military coup in 2021, has seen a devastating rise in journalist detentions, particularly since the junta’s rise to power. The regime has sought to eliminate any dissenting voices, targeting reporters with arbitrary arrests, violence, and legal charges. These actions have led to a significant decline in independent reporting and the ability of journalists to safely report on the situation within the country.
As press freedom deteriorates globally, organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the Free Expression Advocacy Group continue to advocate for the release of imprisoned journalists and call for governments to respect the role of the press in democracy. The global community remains under pressure to address these abuses and hold authoritarian regimes accountable.
