Nigerian journalists have been urged to defend democracy by resisting fake news, disinformation, and political manipulation ahead of the country’s 2027 general elections, as concerns grow over the role of misinformation in shaping public opinion and electoral stability.
The call was made by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and businessman Tony Elumelu during separate events focused on media responsibility, democratic accountability, and national security. Speakers warned that the spread of false information during election periods could deepen political tensions, weaken trust in institutions, and threaten national unity.
General Musa urged journalists and media organizations to remain committed to accuracy, professionalism, and ethical reporting as political campaigns intensify in the coming years. He stressed that the media plays a central role in preserving democratic stability and warned that disinformation campaigns could be used to manipulate citizens and inflame divisions across the country.
The defence chief also emphasized the importance of national security during election periods, arguing that journalists must verify information carefully before publication. According to him, irresponsible reporting and the rapid spread of false narratives on social media could contribute to unrest, violence, and public mistrust during politically sensitive periods.
Business leader Tony Elumelu similarly cautioned journalists against allowing themselves to become tools for political manipulation. Speaking at a media-related event, he encouraged reporters to uphold integrity and avoid spreading unverified claims or politically motivated misinformation. Elumelu argued that strong journalism remains essential for protecting democratic institutions and ensuring citizens receive credible information ahead of elections.
The statements come as Nigerian authorities, civil society groups, and media organizations increasingly warn about the influence of digital misinformation, manipulated content, and coordinated online propaganda campaigns in political discourse. Experts have noted that social media platforms have accelerated the spread of unverified information during previous elections, contributing to polarization and distrust.
Media stakeholders at the events also stressed the need for stronger fact-checking systems, media literacy campaigns, and ethical standards within Nigerian journalism. Participants argued that professional reporting and responsible media practices would be critical in maintaining peaceful and credible elections in 2027 while safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process.
