A new investigative documentary has reignited global attention on the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by naming the Israeli soldier allegedly responsible for her death. The film, titled The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, presents fresh evidence and detailed analysis that points to an Israeli sniper as the shooter, contradicting earlier Israeli claims of uncertainty over the source of the fatal bullet.
The documentary, co-produced by journalist Sharif Kouddous and directed by Yumna Patel for the outlet Mondoweiss, meticulously reconstructs the events of May 11, 2022, when Abu Akleh was shot while covering an Israeli military raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Using satellite imagery, open-source video, audio analysis, and testimony from eyewitnesses and forensic experts, the film identifies the alleged shooter as a member of the Israeli army’s elite Duvdevan unit, specifically a sniper named “A.” The report also names his commander, “Lt. Col. D,” who allegedly authorized the shot.
The film alleges the sniper deliberately targeted Abu Akleh, despite her being identified as a journalist. It further suggests that the military chain of command had full visibility of the situation and allowed the shooting to happen. This directly challenges Israel’s shifting narratives over the past three years, which have ranged from denying responsibility to suggesting Abu Akleh was killed in crossfire. Multiple independent investigations, including by the UN and major media outlets, have already concluded that an Israeli soldier was likely responsible, but this is the first detailed naming of a specific individual.
The documentary also highlights the lack of accountability. While the Israeli military admitted there was a “high possibility” its forces killed Abu Akleh, it claimed the shooting was accidental and closed its investigation without pressing charges. Abu Akleh’s family, Al Jazeera, and press freedom advocates continue to demand justice.
This new exposé has renewed international calls for accountability and has been shared with U.S. officials and human rights organizations. It reinforces accusations that Israel has avoided responsibility, and it underscores broader concerns over the safety of journalists in conflict zones.
