Indonesian Journalist Intimidated with Pig’s Head as Media Crackdown Deepens

The disappearance of Mozambican journalist Arlindo Chissale has cast a dark shadow over press freedom in the country, particularly in the conflict-ridden province of Cabo Delgado. Chissale, an investigative reporter known for his work on illegal mining and security force abuses, vanished on December 29, 2023, in the district of Mocímboa da Praia. Since then, no verified sighting or communication has been made, raising fears of enforced disappearance, a serious human rights violation.
Chissale had traveled to Cabo Delgado to report on developments in the region, which has been plagued by violent insurgency since 2017. Witnesses say he was detained by individuals believed to be linked to state security forces. Despite mounting pressure from local and international human rights groups, Mozambican authorities have provided little information, fueling suspicions of official involvement or negligence.
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the disappearance and is urging the Mozambican government to launch an immediate, impartial, and thorough investigation. The organization also demands that authorities ensure the safety of journalists working in conflict zones. The International Press Institute (IPI) echoed these calls, stressing that the disappearance has a chilling effect on journalism in Mozambique, especially in regions where press scrutiny is already under threat.
The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office has stated that an investigation is underway, but no substantial progress has been made public. Meanwhile, Chissale’s family remains in anguish, with no clarity on his whereabouts or condition. Colleagues describe him as a courageous and meticulous journalist who took great personal risks to expose the truth, particularly regarding illegal resource exploitation and military misconduct.
Cabo Delgado remains one of the most dangerous regions for journalists in Mozambique due to the presence of insurgents, government forces, and multinational corporations vying for control of vast natural resources. Chissale’s case is not isolated; other reporters have faced harassment, threats, or arbitrary detention for covering sensitive issues in the region.
As the days pass without answers, the fear grows that Arlindo Chissale has joined the growing list of journalists silenced in pursuit of the truth. His disappearance is a stark reminder of the perils faced by those who dare to report from the frontlines of conflict and corruption.
