Mozambican journalist Selma Inocência Marivate has publicly denounced an alleged assassination attempt involving poisoning with heavy metals, following a visit to Maputo in March 2025. While residing in Germany, where she currently lives and works, she experienced intense symptoms. Medical tests revealed elevated levels of mercury, uranium, thallium, and cadmium—industrial toxins, she says are often used in covert operations to eliminate critics.
In a video message on Facebook, Selma described the experience as near-fatal. “I was poisoned. I almost lost my life. Today I live with pain and physical limitations,” she said, emphasizing the emotional and physical toll of the ordeal. She attributed the attack to her investigative journalism on corruption and human rights violations, asserting it was a deliberate plot to silence her. “Journalism is not a crime. I won’t stop talking.”
Selma is well-known in Mozambique, having appeared on programs such as “Contacto Directo” and served as a trusted anchor on national television. She has a long reputation for credibility, professionalism, and activism in journalism. Currently, she continues her work and studies in Germany.
These revelations come amid growing concerns over safety risks faced by investigative journalists in Mozambique and beyond. While such poisoning attempts are rare, they raise serious alarms about impunity and the lengths to which adversaries may go to suppress critical reporting.
Selma’s case resonates in broader conversations about press freedom and protections for journalists confronting corruption and abuse. Her decision to speak out publicly is both courageous and strategic, aiming to expose repressive tactics and energize international support for greater accountability.
In sum, Selma Inocência Marivate’s poisoning allegations reflect a chilling escalation in threats against journalists—threats directed at undermining democratic oversight and deterring rigorous investigative reporting.
