The club formerly known as Huddersfield Town has officially renamed its press box at the Accu Stadium to the “Mel Booth Press Box,” in recognition of Mel Booth’s distinguished 35-year career covering the club for the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.
Booth spent more than three decades reporting on the club’s fortunes, becoming a familiar and respected presence among fans, players, and staff alike. His journalism captured decades of change—from promotions and relegations to financial upheaval—and helped document the rich history of the club. His coverage extended beyond match reports, encompassing club culture, supporter stories, and the wider sporting community in Huddersfield.
The decision to name the press facility after Booth was described by club officials as a tribute to his professionalism, longevity, and contribution to the club’s media landscape. The ceremony took place ahead of a home fixture, with Booth present to witness the unveiling of the dedicated press box seating and signage.
In his remarks, Booth expressed his gratitude and humility, noting how the recognition meant a great deal given his strong connections to the local press and the football club. He reflected on the thousands of articles he wrote, the many fans he spoke to, and the numerous locker-room conversations he witnessed over the years. For many in the region, Booth’s work symbolized a steady journalistic presence amid the highs and lows of the team’s journey.
This honor highlights the role local sports journalists play—not only in reporting results—but in chronicling a club’s identity and its place in community life. By naming the press box after Booth, Huddersfield Town reinforces the importance of the local media ecosystem and validates the contribution of a journalist whose work has become part of the club’s narrative.
The “Mel Booth Press Box” will now serve as the vantage point for future media coverage at the stadium, ensuring that Booth’s legacy remains visible each time a reporter settles in to convey the story of Huddersfield Town to its fans and beyond.
