In May 2025, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) publicly expressed solidarity with journalists worldwide who are facing oppression, censorship, and violence. This move came amid growing concerns over the safety and freedom of the press in many countries, where journalists face harassment, arbitrary arrests, and even killings for doing their work.
PFUJ highlighted cases from various parts of the world where journalists continue to suffer under authoritarian regimes, conflict zones, and politically sensitive environments. They condemned attacks on press freedom as an attack on democracy itself and urged governments to respect journalists’ rights to report freely and safely.
The union stressed the importance of global cooperation among media organizations, human rights groups, and governments to protect journalists and uphold the principles of free expression. They called for urgent international action to investigate abuses and hold perpetrators accountable, especially in countries with ongoing conflicts or restrictive media laws.
This declaration by PFUJ aligns with wider global campaigns advocating for the protection of journalists, reinforcing the role of the media as watchdogs essential to transparency and accountability. The union also urged media houses and journalist associations to provide mutual support to colleagues under threat, emphasizing unity in the face of repression.
The PFUJ’s statement serves as a reminder of the precarious conditions many journalists endure and the critical need for continued vigilance and advocacy to ensure that freedom of the press is preserved worldwide.
