The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members is observed annually on March 25 to honor and advocate for the protection of United Nations personnel, humanitarian workers, journalists, and other staff members who have been detained, abducted, or gone missing while carrying out their duties in conflict zones and high-risk areas.
Significance of the Day
This observance commemorates the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett, a former journalist working for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). He was kidnapped in 1985 while on assignment in Beirut, Lebanon, and his body was found in the Bekaa Valley in 2009.
The day serves as a solemn reminder of the grave risks faced by UN staff members as they carry out their vital work under the United Nations flag. It highlights the need for increased protection and support for those who serve humanity in challenging and dangerous environments.
Observance and Activities
On this day, various events are organized to raise awareness about the dangers faced by UN personnel and to express solidarity with those detained or missing. The United Nations and affiliated organizations often host webinars, discussions, and social media campaigns to mobilize action, demand justice, and strengthen the resolve to protect UN staff, peacekeepers, and other colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press.
Global Participation
Countries around the world observe this day by participating in events and activities that honor the courage and dedication of UN personnel. For instance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas has highlighted the significance of this day and encourages national participation.
The International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members not only commemorates those who have been lost but also calls for continued efforts to ensure the safety and security of all humanitarian and UN personnel working in the service of peace and human rights.
