Alex Seryea Yormie, a Liberian radio journalist working with Voice of Tappita in Nimba County, was abducted on July 20 by members of a traditional community group in Lofa County. The incident occurred after Yormie broadcast a segment critically analysing a newly introduced government agricultural subsidy policy. He was held for nearly three days in a remote location before being released on July 23 following pressure from local elders and national press freedom organisations.
Yormie is known for his bold reporting on local governance and policy implementation. His recent segment questioned the fairness and distribution of the new subsidy program, drawing backlash from community figures who accused him of disrespecting traditional authority and promoting dissent. During his captivity, Yormie was threatened and warned to stop airing “anti-government” content. Though he was released without physical harm, he described the experience as deeply traumatising.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the abduction, labelling it an alarming attack on press freedom. “Journalists should not be punished for their reporting by either state or traditional actors,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Muthoki Mumo, urging Liberian authorities to investigate and prevent further intimidation of journalists.
Yormie’s abduction highlights the precarious conditions journalists face in Liberia, especially when reporting from regions dominated by traditional authority. As calls grow for accountability, press groups are demanding that the government reaffirm its commitment to protecting journalists, regardless of where or whom they report on.
