On May 6, Lebanon commemorated Press Martyrs’ Day, honoring journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. President Joseph Aoun emphasized that true loyalty to the sacrifices of fallen journalists lies in preserving national unity and building a strong state that safeguards the dignity of its people. He described journalism’s martyrs as symbols of Lebanon’s unyielding will that refuses submission and defeat, reaffirming his commitment to pursuing a Lebanon rooted in justice, equality, and honor.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also paid tribute to the journalists who were killed defending truth and justice, stating that their voices will continue to resonate in the face of oppression and tyranny. He added that the ink of their pens still draws the path toward a sovereign, just, and strong state—a path the nation remains committed to out of loyalty to their memory and for the protection of future generations.
This year’s observance comes in the aftermath of a 13-month conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, during which 12 journalists were killed and at least 21 others injured, according to the SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom. The day, originally established to honor intellectuals executed during World War I by Ottoman occupiers, has evolved to recognize journalists killed in the line of duty, including those targeted during the Lebanese Civil War and under Syrian tutelage.
Journalists and media organizations have used the occasion to call for accountability and justice for their fallen colleagues, particularly in light of recent Israeli military actions that have resulted in journalist casualties. The Lebanese Press Editors’ Syndicate condemned these actions, stressing that this would not be the first and only time Israel targets journalists despite clear indications of the martyrs being press members.
The commemoration serves as a poignant reminder of the risks journalists face and the ongoing struggle for press freedom and justice in Lebanon and the broader region.
