Reporting from exile: Azerbaijani journalists confront new realities and old fears

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has been identified as the most perilous region for journalists in Pakistan, with a significant number of threats and attacks documented in recent reports. Between May 2024 and April 2025, five journalists were killed nationwide, including two in KP, highlighting the escalating risks faced by media professionals in the province.
The Freedom Network’s annual report indicates that KP accounted for 22 documented cases of threats and violence against journalists, surpassing other regions such as Islamabad and Punjab. These incidents encompass a range of abuses, including physical assaults, legal harassment, and censorship, creating a hostile environment for press freedom.
In response to these challenges, the Pakistan Journalists Safety Coalition (PJSC) has called on the provincial government to enact a comprehensive media safety law. Despite the existence of a draft law, there has been a lack of progress in its implementation, leaving journalists without adequate legal protection.
The situation in KP reflects broader concerns about the state of press freedom in Pakistan, where journalists continue to face significant threats to their safety and ability to report independently. Advocacy groups emphasize the need for immediate legislative action and stronger enforcement of existing laws to ensure the protection of media professionals across the country.
