The family of slain Gazipur journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin has issued a seven-point demand aimed at ensuring justice, accountability, and safety for his loved ones and fellow media workers. Tuhin, a staff reporter for Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, was brutally killed while filming armed men in Chandana Chowrasta, an event that has drawn national outrage and calls for reforms.
At a press conference held at the Gazipur Press Club, Tuhin’s widow, Mukta Begum, demanded the immediate arrest of all individuals involved, along with their financiers. She urged that a charge sheet be submitted within 15 days, a speedy trial in a special tribunal within 90 days, and the detention of the accused throughout the trial process. Recognising the trauma inflicted on her family, she also called for the state to take responsibility for her family’s welfare.
Ensuring the protection of eyewitnesses, her family members, and the editor of Dainik Protidiner Kagoj was another key point. Mukta also asked for a dedicated helpline for journalists and emphasized that Tuhin’s child and family should be supported by the state, stating that justice must extend beyond prosecution to care and safety.
Mukta thanked journalists and citizens for bringing the CCTV footage of the crime to light. She cautioned against the case following the fate of the “Sagar-Runi murder”, another high-profile case marred by lost evidence, and pledged to remain steadfast because of the support she received from the press.
Their seven-point appeal reflects not only a pursuit of justice for one man’s murder. It also highlights broader concerns about press freedom, witness protection, and the vulnerability of journalists in Bangladesh, especially those who expose crime and corruption. Mukta’s call resonates across the media community: without systemic safeguards and swift action, threats and violence against journalists will only grow more emboldened.
