The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, in partnership with the Google News Initiative, is launching a free online course titled Google AI Tools for Journalists: Optimizing Editorial Workflow, Content Creation, and Audience Engagement. Running from October 20 to November 16, 2025, the four-week bilingual (English/Spanish) program offers practical instruction in integrating Google AI into newsroom work.
Designed for journalists, editors, freelancers, and newsroom staff, the course will cover how to streamline editorial tasks, boost investigative reporting, and increase audience interaction through AI tools. Instructors from the Google News Initiative—Mariana Alvarado, Cecilia Bazán, and Carolina Potocar—will lead modules while stressing responsible AI practices and digital security.
Participants will learn distinctions between AI and generative AI, techniques for writing clear prompts, and how to use tools such as NotebookLM, Pinpoint, and Gemini in everyday reporting workflows. They’ll also be introduced to analytics systems like News Consumer Insights and Google Analytics to interpret audience trends. The curriculum includes five modules with lectures, readings, asynchronous discussions, and optional live sessions.
Course structure includes:
- Introduction — foundational AI concepts and course orientation
- Module 1 — prompting, responsible AI, and fact-checking
- Module 2 — applying Pinpoint, NotebookLM, and other tools to discover reporting angles
- Module 3 — generative AI for content creation and creative assistance
- Later modules focus on collaboration, remote reporting, and integrating audience analytics
Because the course is asynchronous, participants can work at their own pace. Real newsroom case studies will help illustrate how AI can save time and refine workflows.
In sum, this offering by the Knight Center and Google aims to equip news professionals with actionable AI skills for modern reporting, emphasizing both efficacy and ethical use.
