On January 31, 2025, journalists and supporters gathered in Tokyo to honor the memory of Kenji Goto, the Japanese reporter who was killed by Islamic State militants in Syria ten years ago. Goto’s tragic death in 2015 marked a grim milestone, as he remains the only Japanese journalist since World War II to be taken hostage and murdered while covering a conflict zone.
Goto was captured during his courageous reporting in Syria, and the shocking video of his execution was released in early February 2015. His work reflected a deep commitment to sharing the realities of war and human suffering with the world, often putting his own life at great risk to bring untold stories to light.
The memorial event in Tokyo was filled with moving tributes that highlighted Goto’s bravery and dedication. Novelist Keiichiro Hirano spoke about the importance of remembering Goto’s devotion to journalism, even in the most dangerous environments. Attendees also heard from a photojournalist who documented the locations connected to Goto’s final days and burial, sharing poignant images that captured the aftermath of his loss.
One of the event’s highlights was the participation of a film producer who originally launched the “I am Kenji” social media campaign. This campaign rallied support and awareness worldwide during Goto’s captivity, demonstrating the power of collective hope and activism in the face of tragedy.
Additionally, Goto’s daughter, who was just 13 when her father died, shared a heartfelt message through a video presentation. The memorial also showcased an innovative short film created by a video artist using generative AI technology to imagine a message from Goto from the future—an artistic tribute to his enduring spirit and impact.
This solemn gathering served as a powerful reminder of the dangers journalists face when reporting in conflict zones, and it honored Kenji Goto’s unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth, no matter the cost. His legacy continues to inspire journalists worldwide to pursue stories that matter, even under the most perilous circumstances.
