Liberian Journalist Alex Seryea Yormie Kidnapped by Traditional Group After Criticizing Government Policy

A disturbing incident unfolded at Sher‑i‑Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SMHS) hospital when protesting doctors physically assaulted and verbally heckled journalists covering their demonstration. Among those targeted was an RK cameraman who suffered minor injuries after being struck with a placard. Female reporters also faced harassment when they attempted to film the protest.
According to on‑site witnesses, tensions rose when media crews arrived to document the doctors’ grievances, primarily over working conditions, staffing shortages, and salary disputes. A sudden shift in mood turned the protest hostile, leading some doctors to confront journalists. One reporter reported being called derogatory names while being aggressively asked to stop filming. The RK cameraman described being hit when he tried to shield himself during the escalating confrontation.
Local press freedom groups quickly condemned the attacks. They emphasised that violence against journalists, even amid tense protests, is unacceptable. Such incidents not only endanger reporters but also threaten public access to essential information. Rights advocates are urging state authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The JK Press Club and the Kashmir Editors Guild have demanded enforcement of safety protocols within hospitals during protests, insisting that medical and law enforcement officials guarantee unhindered media coverage. They also called on hospital administration to issue clear guidelines to protect journalists and maintain open reporting environments.
This event is part of a growing trend in Kashmir where journalists covering protests, especially involving professionals such as doctors or teachers, are met with hostility. Media groups warn that unless urgent measures are taken, such acts may become normalised, placing journalists at risk and undermining democratic transparency.
As the investigation gets underway, the affected media organisations seek justice and better protection for journalists. The incident serves as a reminder that press freedom and the safety of reporters must be safeguarded, even in emotionally charged protest settings.
