Atlanta-based journalist Mario Guevara, a Salvadoran national who has lived in the U.S. for over two decades, was arrested while covering an anti-ICE protest in DeKalb County, Georgia, on June 14, 2025. Guevara, known for his reporting on immigration issues for outlets such as Diario CoLatino and Atlanta Latino, was livestreaming the “No Kings” protest when police declared the gathering unlawful. Despite identifying himself as the press and retreating from the scene, Guevara was detained by DeKalb police alongside several protesters.
Charged with misdemeanor offenses including unlawful assembly, obstruction, and walking on a roadway, Guevara was initially set for release on a recognizance bond. However, his release was blocked after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer, requesting that he be transferred to their custody for potential deportation proceedings. ICE detainers are not criminal warrants but request local law enforcement hold individuals suspected of violating immigration laws for up to 48 hours beyond their scheduled release.
Guevara’s arrest has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates and immigration rights organizations. The Society of Professional Journalists condemned the detention, emphasizing that Guevara was performing his journalistic duties and posed no threat. DeKalb County Commissioner Ted Terry has also called for an investigation into the police response, particularly the deployment of tear gas and the targeting of journalists.
Guevara’s legal situation remains complex. He holds valid work authorization and has a pending green card application through his U.S.-citizen son. Immigration experts suggest that his minor charges should not disqualify him from obtaining permanent residency. However, ICE’s intervention complicates the matter, potentially delaying or derailing his application.
The case highlights growing concerns over press freedom, especially for immigrant journalists covering sensitive topics such as immigration enforcement. Advocates argue that Guevara’s detention reflects a broader pattern of suppressing dissent and intimidating journalists. As legal proceedings unfold, attention now turns to whether ICE will pursue deportation or if Guevara will be released to continue his work.
